This is a series of short blogs we will be posting, and the title surely gives away what it’s all about!
Physical geographers have always found the Earth’s natural features, systems and processes fascinating. They have always possessed an enthusiasm for, and curiosity about, the physical world that ensures we have the knowledge, explanations and on-going investigations needed to develop our understanding of the geo-science branch of geography. And in this day and age of the ‘Anthropocene’, with the impact of human interventions throwing natural systems out of balance, such enthusiasm to know and understand physical geography is needed even more.
So who are these physical geographers? I suspect many geography teachers might be hard pushed to name any. Yet there are numerous physical geographers, past and present, whose stories are inspirational. Their stories are worth sharing with teachers and with students. Incorporated into teaching these stories can inspire, can offer give insights into personal qualities that have enabled ‘discoveries’ about the physical world, and will portray positive role models for students who might not otherwise readily engage with with physical geography.
Who are your ‘inspirational physical geographers’? Let us know in the comments or on social media!
Our first post will drop tomorrow, so watch out…
